We love this campground! The spots are big and shady and the staff is great. They rent tubes to flow down the river for only $ 1/ hr. They have a playground and basketball court for the kids. We will certainly stay here again next time we're in Big Sur.
We were pleasantly surprised. The spots are very near one another but provided shade, a nice BBQ, full hookups with cable. The owners were very friendly. Just a short walk to Gull Lake Marina, a great place to watch the sunset. Also there is a play ground for the kids. We will certainly go back. Great Rate too!
We enjoyed this campground. They have an awesome general store and lots of kids activities. You are allowed to bring your leashed dog on the beach which is a plus. Because we were originally put in a tiny spot next to the loud Hwy, we probably won't go back. We got very lucky to get moved to a spot near the water but that was an anomaly. Apparently lots of people don't mind though. The staff was very kind in helping us move to a more desirable spot, but it just seemed like such a hassle.
This was our first time at a KOA. The campground was clean, well maintained, plenty of friendly staff and lots of kids activities as well as a huge field to let the dogs run. Sacramento just happens to be hot hot hot in August, thank Dog for the clean pool. The only thing I would recommend is maybe a sign at check in advising to use mozzy repellent at dusk. We got eaten alive and I met another family that had the same problem .
For a resort, it leaves much to be desired. No general store; they do have wood and ice no toilet chemicals which we needed. The spots are very close together which means your sitting on your neighbors sewer line and they can hear your every move. Laundry, for such a large place had 3 working washing and 3 working dryers which means wait, wait, and wait. Spots near the lake mean you are on the highway, some are just a concrete slab with no trees and very small. We booked with another family and were at opposite ends originally. Took some time to fix. We had a good time regardless of crap spots, good Dog beach near. Won't go back. Next time we'll dry camp on lake.
We spent Thanksgiving here with another family. The people in the office were very helpful and friendly. They hosted two nights of Movies Under the Stars which the kids very much enjoyed. I felt the campground was very child and dog friendly ( we loved the dog run!) The location was excellent and we never knew we were so close to the highway. No freeway noise at all. We loved the area and can't wait to go back.
Two families stayed at Shady Rest for three nights, then we all had reservations to go to Mammoth Lakes RV, just across the street. We walked over to have a look at the place before we checked in. The lady in the office was very grumpy. When I asked her if the pool, which was empty, would be refilled by our check in day, she said she wasn't sure if she would refill it because people are too dirty using the pool. Which, I guess makes the pool dirty.. We then walked over to see our spots which were on top of each other, no room to put our our awnings and no trees or shade and no where for the kids to play. (We could not get in the full hook - up area which did have shade). We were so bummed about the attitude and the lame spots we went back to tell our husbands at New Shady and we decided to dry camp 3 more nights there. Best decision ever.
Stayed only 1 night on our way from Mammoth to Pismo Beach. For a stop-over destination, this place can't be beat. Brand new, Friendly staff, so many amenities (many of them complimentary) and the bathrooms were like the Four Seasons. This was exactly what we needed after 6 nights dry camping. If you're heading through Bakersfield and need an RV Park you will not be disappointed!
We loved this campsite so much we canceled Mammoth Lakes RV ( see review) and decided to dry camp here for 6 nights total. The Rangers were extremely friendly and accommodating. The spots are shady and big, lots of room for kids to run around and some terrific bike paths from the campground. We can't wait to go back to this campground. Perfect location, perfect atmosphere! One minor exception is that there are no showers available here.
